Keeping our bodies in healthy balance helps us survive our daily stressors and care for ourselves. Many of the holistic complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) methods are based on Eastern and scientific systems of thought that promote equilibrium between mind and body moving toward prevention of difficulties rather than cure. Increasingly many of these practices are becoming recognized as bone fide treatments in our fast-paced stressful culture. ComplementaryAlternative therapy refers to health practices that are used as an optional additive treatment or that take the place of traditional or conventional medicine. As the name suggests complementary health refers to health practices that complement or that are used in conjunction with traditional or conventional medicine.

But for a trained Naturopathic Practitioner giving time to listen and inquire will unveil the true cause of discomfort. Cynthia who at that time held a diploma in Psychology was first exposed to alternative medicine in Hong Kong were she lived with her husband in the early 90s. “I had a terrible congestion and used up all my western medicine. I was so desperate that I was ready to try anything to get a relief. ” Walking narrow streets she saw a store that looked like a pharmacy and stepped in. Shelves were covered with jars with strange objects that reminded mostly the office of the famous Hogwarts potion master not a drug store.

The report advised: "It is important when discussing IVF treatment with couples that their use of alternative therapies is also discussed as this may have a bearing on treatment success. "Until further evidence is available it is best to counsel couples against the use of alternative therapies when also having IVF. "The number of couples turning to fertility treatments in order to conceive has risen significantly in recent years as more women choose to delay starting a family for longer than previous generations. In July the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority reported that fertility clinics will now be expected to provide each patient with a costed treatment plan subject to new UK guidelines.

The proposal came in a DoH consultation on plans to subject alternative medicine to professional regulation. Experts argue that this would offer cheaper and more effective protection of public safety than attempting to regulate individual remedies.

A casual look at the classified ads in newspapers attests to an alarming proliferation of herbal health practitioners with a ready market for their products. Yet herbal medicine is used for managing symptoms of colds flu malaria blood diseases skin conditions and even for controlling the spread of cancer. Clinics specialising in herbal products have been established in major towns offering cures for a myriad of conditions. Some practitioners even schedule countrywide tours to market their products and services at reduced costs in comparison with conventional medicine. Lack of documented use of herbal medicine inhibits planning for managing and regulating its practitioners.
Related from Indoorenvirons: Big money from traditional medicine industry

(AP) —pponents of a new Arkansas law that bans practitioners of alternative medicine from dispensing drugs or identifying themselves as doctors are asking a federal judge to declare the law unconstitutional. A federal lawsuit filed on behalf of a Texarkana practitioner of alternative medicine claims that the new law was motivated by competition and not concern for the public health. But lawmakers argue that it’s critical to forbid practitioners from administering injections or dispensing drugs because they don’t have medical degrees. The law took effect July 29. America has more lawsuits against the doctors than the rest of the world combined. Whereas millions of people are referred to the alternative healthcare in Europe most American physicians continue to believe that alternative medicine is voodoo medicine. The role of preventive healthcare is the least emphasized area in medicine. Racial discrimination in medicine is a fact of life. Not only the patients are discriminated but the minority healthcare providers also face discrimination. The insurance and pharmaceutical companies have some hard questions to answer.

Unlike doctors herbalists and acupuncturists won’t have to provide proof their treatments work. Anything that gives an official seal of approval to alternative medicine is bound to increase its credibility and popularity. And that is why regulation is far from sensible. As Britain’s leading expert on alternative medicine Professor Edzard Ernst points out: “If you regulate nonsense it is still nonsense. And NHS cash is wasted on homeopathy – also known as sugar pills and “magic” water – another example of the way regulation adds an aura of respectability to unproven treatments. Homeopathic “remedies” are licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority.

Some alternative practitioners recommend using co-enzyme Q10 to prevent this type of muscle pain but a recent review showed no clear benefit from this supplement. ne popular alternative medicine product for high cholesterol is red yeast rice a dietary supplement that has been used in China for centuries. RYR contains a chemical monacolin-K that is identical to the active ingredient in the prescription statin Mevacor (lovastatin). And RYR does not seem to cause the side effects. A new study reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine has shown that RYR may be a safe alternative for people who have been intolerant of statins. In this study 62 patients who had stopped taking at least one statin drug because of muscle pain were randomized to receive either red yeast rice or a placebo twice daily for 24 weeks.
