A recent study from Faculty of 1000 Medicine suggested that the success of IVF is 30 per cent lower in women who have used alternative therapies such as reflexology and acupuncture prior to starting treatment. The report advised: "It is important when discussing IVF treatment with couples that their use of alternative therapies is also discussed as this may have a bearing on treatment success. "Until further evidence is available it is best to counsel couples against the use of alternative therapies when also having IVF. "The number of couples turning to fertility treatments in order to conceive has risen significantly in recent years as more women choose to delay starting a family for longer than previous generations. In July the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority reported that fertility clinics will now be expected to provide each patient with a costed treatment plan subject to new UK guidelines.
