Government probes chelation-heart disease study

The $30 million study with 1500 participants so far is one of the largest alternative medicine experiments ever launched. It tests high doses of vitamin and mineral supplements and chelation a treatment used for lead poisoning that has not been proved safe or effective for heart disease. Researchers suspended enrollment last August when the federal ffice of Human Research Protections began a probe into whether the people in the study were being fully informed of risks and adequately protected. Chelation (pronounced kee-LAY-shun) involves intravenous doses of a drug in this case disodium EDTA. Proponents claim it can flush out calcium that has built up in artery walls.

Daemon Jones Today my dad gave me a call to tell me about an article in the Washington Post. He said ?maybe you should send the article out to your patients or something?. The title of the article was ?Mainstream Physicians Give Alternatives a Try? and my father was excited to see my type of medicine alternative medicine in the paper. I have to admit I also get excited to see my type of medicine in the paper. The article highlighted several conventional doctors in the Washington DC area that use different forms of alternative and complimentary medicine in their practice. Complimentary and alternative medicine usually refers to use of eastern Indian philosophy traditional Chinese medicine herbal or botanical medicine nutrition and nutritional supplements homeopathy or energy medicine. Integrative medicine is the term that is starting to be used for practicing medicine in this way.
