DIAZ" Alternative medicine II TWO readers of my piece on alternative medicine (MT, March 28) wanted to know if there’s clinical evidence that glucosamine is really effective against arthritis. The quick answer is none, or more precisely, research is still being done. The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) is in fact sponsoring such a study. The condition called arthritis is the inflammation of the joints, causing pain and swelling. Treatment is usually based on analgesic drugs, steroids, and gold salts.

It’s a treatment he uses in his own practice, Medical Wellness Associates, which he founded with his wife, chiropractor Dr. The practice combines traditional and alternative medical techniques through a method called integrative family medicine. “We try to use natural medicine first, drugs second and surgery last, instead of the other way around,” Gallagher said. Gallagher said his interest in medical missions was piqued during the past three years as he studied at West Virginia University. In December, he finished his family medicine residency there. During his time there, he worked at a free clinic and, twice a month, went on medical rounds through the streets of Morgantown treating the homeless.

According to its last reported accounts the company had little more than £10m in the bank and was losing £14m per year. The company is not on its own. The UK biotech sector is a cash-hungry machine. Over the last year, the 56 loss-making companies in our survey lost a combined £439m. This was balanced by the 10 profitable companies reporting a £40m profit. The figures may be large but they are not unusual. Drug research is expensive and long term… Karl Keegan, Canaccord Adams’ head of life science research, said: “You are already seeing casualties. Companies are having a very tough time. Some have put themselves up for sale or have been forced to look for alternative sources of financing. ” Although Mr Keegan is reticent to name companies it is not hard to identify them.
