Beverly Biehl of Frisco: Mind over illness
Dallas Morning News – Apr 4, 2008
While going through my cancer treatments, I was careful to avoid Vitamin C supplements, so as not to interfere with my chemo. I ate organic meats, juiced loads of carrots and apples, and even kept going to the gym. After my body had been declared cancer-free, I delved into the vast world of alternative medicine to help my mind heal, too. A gifted cranial-sacral massage therapist helped me to visualize my cancer cells as an ugly worm named Bubba, which turned into a horde of fleeing scorpions. I chased them out of my affected tissues, and they exited through my left elbow. She had me “eliminate” the last few stragglers into my yard before I entered my home, and wouldn’t you know it? The two shrubs that were the recipients of the scorpions died that winter! Acupuncture, through a specialized treatment called NAET, totally eliminated the lactose intolerance I had struggled with for more than 14 years, nearly all of my children’s food and environmental allergies, and has kept us antibiotic-free for four years. Acupuncture even fixed my hot flashes and PMS.

Berries may keep mosquitoes at bay
Economic Times – Apr 4, 2008
“We found that these
plants produce two types of phytochemicals. The most interesting are the
secondary phytochemicals, such as steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids and alkaloids
these act as a repellent which protect against the lethal effects of the larval
mosquitoes,” Nandita Chowdhury, Anupam Ghosh and Goutam Chandra said. They have published their
findings in the latest issue of BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The next step is to identify
the active compounds in the berries and to test whether these are effective in
field trials, they said. A
number of plants have been reported for their anti-mosquito activity. Most of
the studies report the active compounds to be steroidal saponins, which are
thought to kill larvae by interfering with their cuticle membranes. However, only a few botanicals
have moved from the laboratory to field use.

Women Take Charge of Breast Cancer in Different Ways: Sociologist…
Newswise – Newswise (press release) – Apr 4, 2008
Due in part to positive changes made by the Women?s Health Movement since the 1970s, says Ericksen, there is enormous pressure from our culture today for women to take charge of their disease. Donna, a 48-year-old lawyer and married mother, described for Ericksen a decision-making process that is typical of biomedical experts: ?What I usually do is seek a lot of people?s opinions first, and then I get all those different opinions, and then I decide for myself. ?According to Ericksen, we hear accounts most often from these ?biomedical experts,? as well as ?alternative medicine experts? who by contrast do not put their faith in traditional medicine, because they are most often driven to tell their stories. But in keeping with the author?s goal of letting patients? voices be heard, Taking Charge of Breast Cancer showcases stories from members of other groups of responders as well ? traditional responders and those who turn to religion or activism for strength. The majority of the religious responders, defined as those who relied on faith as a basis for recovery, were African American. Like other religious responders, Shantal, a married 51-year-old African American woman and longtime city employee, believed that God played a role in ensuring her early diagnosis. Normally reserved, Shantal insisted on a biopsy when her radiologist told her that calcifications were nothing to worry about.
